You should consider going to Crete if you are thinking of a Greece vocation. This is a notable island and among the largest in the country. Located between the Libyan Sea and the Sea of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea, the island is about 260 km long and 60 km wide. The island is divided into four districts: Rethimno, Lasithi, Chania and Heraklion. Crete is considered one of the most magnificent isles of Greece and is an adventurous place to explore.
Heraklion is the biggest and key prefecture of Crete. With a population of about 275,000 people, this is the largest city and is regarded as the capital of Crete. Tourism is the main industry of the island as tourists who arrive at the shores of the island drive its economy. This is the reason why tourists are well taken care of and are assured of a wonderful time while on the island. After all, tourists are the ones who make the economy grow when they spend money in the island.
At one time, Crete was regarded as the center of the ancient civilization of the Minoa people. There is evidence of the power, knowledge and achievements of this ancient culture of the Bronze Age in the various tombs, palaces and sacred sites located throughout the island. This offers a historical backdrop to tourists who are visiting Crete and want something to enjoy.
Greek is the main language spoken in Crete. Also, since the island is a major tourist destination, most of the population understands and speaks English. Communication with foreigners is not a big problem in the island since even the people living in the small villages also understand and speak English.
Visitors can get into the island through different means. You can reach Crete by plane through the three major airports in the island. You can come through Heraklion, which hosts the Nikos Kazantzakis airport, or through Chania where the Daskalogiannis military airport is located. There is also a new public airport located in Sitia that visitors can use to get into Crete. There are several flights that depart from the main island of Greece to Crete.
Visitors can also reach Crete by ferry. You will find various ferry services in mainland Greece and other islands that serve Crete. The journey usually lasts two and a half hours from the mainland. You can make your way around mainland Crete through the inland bus service operating in the island. The bus has a frequent schedule and serves many parts of the island. Sometimes the buses divert their usual routes to take visitors to small villages if asked . The most convenient and affordable way to get around Crete is public transportation.
If you need a more personal and private adventure while on a Crete vocation, you can opt for a car rental. However, you may have to carry along your driver’s license for this and ensure your car insurance covers you to the areas that you will visit. Most petrol stations are closed at around 7pm.
If you are touring in a private car, you should fill up beforehand to avoid spoiling your Greece vocation with an empty tank while you are on an isolated part of the island. Crete is a definite plus for you when you are considering a Greece vocation.
