The great island of Rhodes counts among the most sizeable and productive of the Greek islands. It is also much frequented by tourists. The island is very famous for its vacation spots and marvelous seaside. It also abounds with ancient historical locations and towns modeled after the Middle Ages’ habitations.
Rhodes has many locations in which visitors might be interested. The beautiful seaside of Rhodes appeals to tourists worldwide. One downside is that there is no sand on the beaches; rather one can find gravel. Despite this, people enjoy visiting the island because of the excellent sunny climate that prevails for most of the year.
Rhodes City is the largest city and the administrative center of the island. It is usually the first place visitors come to when they land on Rhodes. Another valuable site is Lindos, a unique village offering magnificent scenery. A historic acropolis is also present there. In the vicinity of Lindos lies a tiny village called Haraki, which was once famous for its fishing activity. Pefkos is a tourist village that is quite near Lindos. It used to be just a group of farms and homes that evolved over time to become a major tourist center.
If one wants more fun activities, Faliraki is the place to be. This is where tourists head to when they want to have fun parties and make merry. The golf course of the island can be found at Afandou, one of the larger villages. In order to experience the rural culture of Rhodes, tourists often visit villages such as Theologos, where the ancient Greek customs still have a prominence.
Of course, Greek is spoken everywhere on Rhodes but the high density of tourists have prompted the inhabitants to learn English as well as German. This has facilitated interaction with the inhabitants to large extent. English language is quite common among citizens of the dense tourist areas.
Access to Rhodes is possible by airplane or ferries. By air, a direct flight to Rhodes can be obtained from Diagoras International Airport found on the western shore of Greece, some 14 kilometers from the city of Rhodes. Flights also come in from Athens, Thessaloniki and Crete quite frequently. Direct connection from other European cities is possible via chartered planes. As regards sea access, ferries from towns such as Bodrum, Symi and Tilos come in at frequent intervals. Cruise ships also berth at the commercial port of the island, found in the eastern part of the city of Rhodes.
Travel within Rhodes is assured through the bus system, which operates all over the island. The cost of travelling by bus is quite low. There are regular stops but they do not adhere to any particular time table. Often, the bus driver will let you on or off if you notify him during the travel. Taxis are also available if a more personalized approach to visiting Rhodes is required. Taxis can go virtually anywhere on the island and are not bound to the route limitations of the buses.
