With a population of about one million people, Thessaloniki is one of the major cities in Greece. In fact, it is only second to Athens. This city is found in the Central Macedonia region and has a rich history that stretches over three thousand years. This history can be easily depicted from the many ancient relics that bring out the past of this town during the Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman eras.
There are different ways for you to can get into Thessaloniki. The most common one used by tourists from other countries who come by air is the airport. The Macedonia International airport is a stopover for both domestic and foreign flights. Simply put, visitors can conveniently enter Thessaloniki through the airport.
Another way to reach Thessaloniki is by bus. There is a good network of roads in the city and the buses usually operate from Skopje bus station. If you have traveled in a group, some travel agencies usually organize minibuses to take tourists to Thessaloniki. You can also take the train to the city. There are both day and night train trips from Athens to Thessaloniki that usually takes about six hours to complete the trip. You therefore have two convenient ways to choose from when you want to get to Thessaloniki.
Tourists are advised to use buses when going back to Athens instead of using taxis. Although taxis also provide good service, sometimes visitors may have problems with visa issues. Moreover, most taxis operate to the Skopje central bus terminal but not always the other way round. Also, it is possible for citizens of Greece to enter Macedonia without having a visa, while citizens of the Republic of Macedonia need visas to get into Greece.
Thessaloniki offers many places of interest to visitors. One of the major attractions is the White Tower of Thessaloniki. This is regarded as the symbol of the city. Also, visitors will be fascinated by the remains of the Ottoman Thessaloniki in Ano Poli or the Upper Town. There are many restaurants, shops and cafes that will appeal to you. Also, you should not leave Thessaloniki without visiting the archeological sites and museums.
