With a population of about one million people, Thessaloniki is one of the major cities in Greece. In fact, it is only second to Athens. This city is found in the Central Macedonia region and has a rich history that stretches over three thousand years. This history can be easily depicted from the many ancient relics that bring out the past of this town during the Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman eras.

There are different ways for you to can get into Thessaloniki. The most common one used by tourists from other countries who come by air is the airport. The Macedonia International airport is a stopover for both domestic and foreign flights. Simply put, visitors can conveniently enter Thessaloniki through the airport.

Another way to reach Thessaloniki is by bus. There is a good network of roads in the city and the buses usually operate from Skopje bus station. If you have traveled in a group, some travel agencies usually organize minibuses to take tourists to Thessaloniki. You can also take the train to the city. There are both day and night train trips from Athens to Thessaloniki that usually takes about six hours to complete the trip. You therefore have two convenient ways to choose from when you want to get to Thessaloniki.

Tourists are advised to use buses when going back to Athens instead of using taxis. Although taxis also provide good service, sometimes visitors may have problems with visa issues. Moreover, most taxis operate to the Skopje central bus terminal but not always the other way round. Also, it is possible for citizens of Greece to enter Macedonia without having a visa, while citizens of the Republic of Macedonia need visas to get into Greece.

Thessaloniki offers many places of interest to visitors. One of the major attractions is the White Tower of Thessaloniki. This is regarded as the symbol of the city. Also, visitors will be fascinated by the remains of the Ottoman Thessaloniki in Ano Poli or the Upper Town. There are many restaurants, shops and cafes that will appeal to you. Also, you should not leave Thessaloniki without visiting the archeological sites and museums.

You will enjoy a delicious array of cuisine while in Thessaloniki. The cuisines range from local gourmet to popular affluent haute international fares. There are many foreign restaurants that complement the local taverns available in the city. All these eating spots offer a wide variety of culinary tastes. The cuisine is predominantly Mediterranean with sea food forming a major part of the dishes.

The nightlife will not disappoint you since the city is alive with activities. Whether you want to go to the beach for some bonfire or you prefer to enjoy the buzzing nightlife in nightclubs and discos, Thessaloniki has all of these. Indulge in the luxury of you vacation by spending the night away in any fun way that you want.

When you are thinking of a vacation in Greece, do not forget to include Thessaloniki as one of your must-stop destination places.

Whoever went to Greece and failed to stop by the Mykonos does not know the magnificent beauty that he must have missed! Lying near Paros at the middle of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos is one of the favorite tourist stop sites in Greece. The island makes part of the Cyclades and is an exciting place whether by day or night. It is no wonder that it is one of the most visited islands in Greece.

To get into Mykonos, you can go through the main airport in the Greek mainland and take a direct flight to the island. There are also regular flights to the mainland to the island through its home airport or through Thessalonika or Athens. Many of the visitors stop by Mykonos during the summer from either the airports in Greece or by charter flights that are available from different European routes.

If you want a more luxurious way to reach Mykonos, you can choose to get to it by sea. The sea offers two choices for tourists: the regular ferry and the catamarans. The regular ferry takes about four hours to reach the island. Also, the ferry can carry buses and rental cars across to Mykonos. The catamarans offer a faster way to the island by sea. The high speed catamarans operate from the Paros and Piraeus terminals daily, just like the regular ferries.

After you have arrived in Mykonos, you can choose a variety of transport mode that will suit you. There is a good network of roads that is served by regular buses that take visitors to different points in the island. If you want a more adventurous ride, you can consider hiring scooters or ATVs. These are best for easy movement if you don’t want to move within the schedule of the regular buses. Taxis are also available for those who need them.

The island of Mykonos has many attraction places and landmarks. Some of its most visited landmarks are the windmills which provide a breathtaking sight. Also, visitors are attracted to an area, which has magnificent balconies in the island, known as Little Venice. You can trace the history of the island through the relics that are found at the Archeological Museum of Mykonos. As you tour the island, you will come across beautiful works of art from different artists who reside in the island.

Although the whole island is a beauty by itself, the most famous tourist spots are its beaches. There are many activities available for tourist at the beaches. For example, underwater sea life exploration and snorkeling are some of the activities you will enjoy at the Agios Ionnis Beach. This beach offers a spectacular sight and is one of the few natural beaches that rarely get crowded.

Another beach that is popular with tourists, especially those under 30 years old, is the Paradise Beach. This is the place to be if you want to interact with crowds of tourists under the age of 30. The beach has large pebbly sand and most people prefer being there when it is windy.

The above mentioned beaches are just some of the top beaches in Mykonos. Other fine beaches of the island include Elia beach, Ornos beach, Psarous beach, and Paranga beach. Mykonos will give you the Greece vacation of your life.

When you have gone to vocation in Greece, Athens is one of the must visit places. First, it is the capital of this magnificent country and therefore one of the major tourist sights of the land. If you want to know about Greece you have to know about the life and customs in its cities. Athens is one of the major cities and it deserves special attention especially to first time tourists in Greece.

Profile

The city of Athens has a population of about 3.7 million people. The city is regarded as the foundation stone of the Greece and also as the cradle of Western civilization. This urban city is surrounded by mountains on three sides namely, Mt. Pendeli, Mt. Parnitha and Mt. Ymettos. There are twelve hills inside the city. The most prominent of the hills are the Lykavittos and Acropolis.

Beautiful Sights

Athens has a wide array of attractions and places of interest to the tourist. One of the most outstanding ancient landmarks in the city is the Acropolis. This is an ancient high city which houses large marble temples that were dedicated to Athena, the goddess of the city. There are also interesting places at the foot of the Acropolis where you can visit. There include the districts of Thissio, Plaka and Monastiraki. In these districts, you will notice remarkable restored neoclassical homes and restaurants from the 19th century, in addition to the scenic view of the ruins of the city during the Roman era.

You should also visit the Piraeus, which is the ancient port of the city of Athens. Today, the port still serves as an industrial port for commodities moving in and out of Greece. This is the place where connections to Crete, the Aegean Islands and almost all of Attica are found. You can also visit Syntagma Square, the business district of Athens. The Square has a number of landmarks, the most spectacular one being the Royal Palace. Most of the key banks, hotels, restaurants and other important offices are located in this place.

Getting Into Athens

You can conveniently get to Athens since it’s the capital city of Greece. This is especially real to visitors who get into Greece from other countries by plane. There is a new airport that was opened in 2001; the Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. The airport is situated 27 km to the east of the city center and has emerged as an attractive and efficient way of getting into Greece.

Visitors can get to the city center from the airport by the city’s railway system, the Metro. The city’s Line 3 extension is the airport Metro, which leads to downtown Monastiraki and Syntagma stations. Taxis and buses are also available; they operate from the airport to the city.

If you are coming from other regions of Greece, you can take regional coaches which that connect other cities of Greece to Athens. Also, there is a national railway service that connects the different Greece cities. Public transport in Athens is cheap, there is a simplified ticketing system that allows passengers to use any means of public transport.

Transport will not be one of your problems when you are on an Athens Greece vocation.

The great island of Rhodes counts among the most sizeable and productive of the Greek islands. It is also much frequented by tourists. The island is very famous for its vacation spots and marvelous seaside. It also abounds with ancient historical locations and towns modeled after the Middle Ages’ habitations.

Rhodes has many locations in which visitors might be interested. The beautiful seaside of Rhodes appeals to tourists worldwide. One downside is that there is no sand on the beaches; rather one can find gravel. Despite this, people enjoy visiting the island because of the excellent sunny climate that prevails for most of the year.

Rhodes City is the largest city and the administrative center of the island. It is usually the first place visitors come to when they land on Rhodes. Another valuable site is Lindos, a unique village offering magnificent scenery. A historic acropolis is also present there. In the vicinity of Lindos lies a tiny village called Haraki, which was once famous for its fishing activity. Pefkos is a tourist village that is quite near Lindos. It used to be just a group of farms and homes that evolved over time to become a major tourist center.

If one wants more fun activities, Faliraki is the place to be. This is where tourists head to when they want to have fun parties and make merry. The golf course of the island can be found at Afandou, one of the larger villages. In order to experience the rural culture of Rhodes, tourists often visit villages such as Theologos, where the ancient Greek customs still have a prominence.

Of course, Greek is spoken everywhere on Rhodes but the high density of tourists have prompted the inhabitants to learn English as well as German. This has facilitated interaction with the inhabitants to large extent. English language is quite common among citizens of the dense tourist areas.

Access to Rhodes is possible by airplane or ferries. By air, a direct flight to Rhodes can be obtained from Diagoras International Airport found on the western shore of Greece, some 14 kilometers from the city of Rhodes. Flights also come in from Athens, Thessaloniki and Crete quite frequently. Direct connection from other European cities is possible via chartered planes. As regards sea access, ferries from towns such as Bodrum, Symi and Tilos come in at frequent intervals. Cruise ships also berth at the commercial port of the island, found in the eastern part of the city of Rhodes.

Travel within Rhodes is assured through the bus system, which operates all over the island. The cost of travelling by bus is quite low. There are regular stops but they do not adhere to any particular time table. Often, the bus driver will let you on or off if you notify him during the travel. Taxis are also available if a more personalized approach to visiting Rhodes is required. Taxis can go virtually anywhere on the island and are not bound to the route limitations of the buses.

You should consider going to Crete if you are thinking of a Greece vocation. This is a notable island and among the largest in the country. Located between the Libyan Sea and the Sea of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea, the island is about 260 km long and 60 km wide. The island is divided into four districts: Rethimno, Lasithi, Chania and Heraklion. Crete is considered one of the most magnificent isles of Greece and is an adventurous place to explore.

Heraklion is the biggest and key prefecture of Crete. With a population of about 275,000 people, this is the largest city and is regarded as the capital of Crete. Tourism is the main industry of the island as tourists who arrive at the shores of the island drive its economy. This is the reason why tourists are well taken care of and are assured of a wonderful time while on the island. After all, tourists are the ones who make the economy grow when they spend money in the island.

At one time, Crete was regarded as the center of the ancient civilization of the Minoa people. There is evidence of the power, knowledge and achievements of this ancient culture of the Bronze Age in the various tombs, palaces and sacred sites located throughout the island. This offers a historical backdrop to tourists who are visiting Crete and want something to enjoy.

Greek is the main language spoken in Crete. Also, since the island is a major tourist destination, most of the population understands and speaks English. Communication with foreigners is not a big problem in the island since even the people living in the small villages also understand and speak English.

Visitors can get into the island through different means. You can reach Crete by plane through the three major airports in the island. You can come through Heraklion, which hosts the Nikos Kazantzakis airport, or through Chania where the Daskalogiannis military airport is located. There is also a new public airport located in Sitia that visitors can use to get into Crete. There are several flights that depart from the main island of Greece to Crete.

Visitors can also reach Crete by ferry. You will find various ferry services in mainland Greece and other islands that serve Crete. The journey usually lasts two and a half hours from the mainland. You can make your way around mainland Crete through the inland bus service operating in the island. The bus has a frequent schedule and serves many parts of the island. Sometimes the buses divert their usual routes to take visitors to small villages if asked . The most convenient and affordable way to get around Crete is public transportation.

If you need a more personal and private adventure while on a Crete vocation, you can opt for a car rental. However, you may have to carry along your driver’s license for this and ensure your car insurance covers you to the areas that you will visit. Most petrol stations are closed at around 7pm.

If you are touring in a private car, you should fill up beforehand to avoid spoiling your Greece vocation with an empty tank while you are on an isolated part of the island. Crete is a definite plus for you when you are considering a Greece vocation.

Greece is one of the best vacation destinations in the world. This beautiful country has a lot of perfect scenery for those on vacation. However, before you decide to choose it as a vacation destination, do your research on the country. Since you will be in a foreign country, expect some things to be different from what you are used to in your country.

Description
The Greece culture has long influenced today’s arts, philosophy, politics and sports. Located in the southern part of Europe, Greece stands in the coastlines along the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Ionian seas. Not only is its culture fascinating, but the island also boasts of magnificent scenery and landmarks that will appeal to any tourist.

Top Places to Visit
The best places to visit in any country are usually located in its capital city. Athens is the capital city of Greece and as expected, it boasts of a variety of attractions that will make your stay in Greece worthwhile. Apart from world class hotels and other buildings, the city also boasts of one of Greece’s most famous landmark: the Acropolis. This is a perfect place for learning the Greek culture and is one of the major attractions of the country.

In Greece you cannot visit Athens only to fully experience what the country has to offer. Apart for the Acropolis, the Delphi is another important landmark in the country. Those who are familiar with Greek culture will recall that this is the place where famous oracle Apollo was pronounced. The attraction is an archeological site and stands as one of the best places to learn about the fascinating Greek culture and history.

There is no vacation that is complete without going to the beach, and in Greece this is not an exception. There are beautiful islands with scenic beaches for visitors to enjoy. One of the most popular islands is the Mykonos, which is a top tourist destination in the country. If you want to experience over 400 years old ancient civilization of the Minoa people, Crete is the island to visit.

Greece Climate
Greece offers one of the best climates in Europe, with its summer heat stretching for seven months.

If you want to discover an island with really singular scenery during your Greek holidays, then the island of Santorini is the place to be. Part of the Cyclades group of islands, Santorini lies between the islands of Ios and Anafi. Renowned for its breathtaking sceneries, dazzling sunsets and wonderful seaside, Santorini is a necessary stop in your Greek voyage.

There many different types of scenery in Santorini, ranging from villages steeped in ancient Greek culture to beautiful beaches. The village of Mesa Gonia is a classic example of the architectural legacy of the island. Pyrgos also has some ancestral vestiges such as a Venetian castle and Byzantine churches.

The administrative center of the island is at Fira, where Venetian and Cycladic buildings abound. The roads of Fira are covered with cobblestones, and are bordered with many shops, hotels and pubs. The particularity of the town is that it stands on a cliff about 900 feet above its port. A cable car is available from the port, linking it directly to Fira. Otherwise, the town can be accessed by using the hundreds of mules that wait at the port and enable travelers to climb up the 588 tortuous steps to the town.

The highest spot of the island is Ia, just a short distance from Fira. Ia is well-known for its whitewashed buildings and charming sunsets that have been acclaimed to be among the world’s best sunsets. The beaches are another attraction of Santorini. Kamari is a one of a kind: a black pebble beach. The beach at Perissa is one of the neatest of the country. It is famous for the Greek fish taverns that are around it. Monolithos is a beach prized by children because its water is not very deep.

The island can be reached by air or sea. Airplanes can be obtained from Athens. This is the most rapid way to arrive at Santorini—it takes just 30 minutes. The airport of Santorini is situated in the village of Kamari. Chartered planes lift off from various European metropolises to land at Kamari at regular intervals.

Ferry is also a common way to access the island. Ferries depart from the port of Piraeus and reach Santorini through stops at Paros and Nixos Islands. At the peak tourist seasons, ferries are also available from the island of Crete. The ferries berth at Athinios where buses and taxis wait to take the visitors to various villages across the island.

Ferries however take more time to reach the island. Tourists also report feeling seasick, especially if they are not accustomed to this mode of travel. An alternative, if one is bent on using the sea way, is the high-speed catamarans that also visit the island on a regular basis. The length of the journey from Piraeus to Santorini on a high-speed catamaran is only about 4 ½ hours.

For a more stylish and relaxed visit to the Greek islands, cruise ships also berth at the island’s old port, a few kilometers from Athinios.

As with visiting any country, a voyage to Greece needs to be prepared adequately. Making dispositions for travel is a vital element of any preparations for travel. It is therefore important to find out about the different ways of traveling across the country. This article presents some useful information on the modes of travel available to tourists who visit Greece.

Car Travel

Car traveling in Greece has its pros and cons. Every person must therefore weigh the suitability of this mode of travel for him. Of course, one needs to be aware of the local traffic regulations before one can take up the road.

A first benefit of using the car is that the countryside of Greece opens up to you—something traditional tourists do not get to see. Public transport cannot reach everywhere and there are beautiful sites in the Greek countryside that merit a visit. You may thus get a first hand experience of Greece; in a way normal tourists would not.

There are also certain drawbacks when using a car. First and foremost is the behavior of the Greek drivers, which might seem to be shocking to foreigners. Greek drivers are famed for their viciousness. This may be why the Greek roads are the most deadly ones in the EU. A lot of caution has therefore to be taken when driving in Greece.

Secondly, using a motor vehicle can be more expensive than the group tours. Even though Greek roads are in good condition and propose an admirable driving experience, it must be noted that most of them charge the traveler on using them. In the end, these charges can accumulate to become a significant part of the total travel expense. One should bear them in mind when planning for the trip.

Using the Public Transport System

The transport grid of Greece is also a popular way to visit the country. Several choices present themselves to the tourist. All important Greek metropolises have municipal bus transport systems in place. These buses go everywhere within and around the cities. They also enable travel between cities. If there are places that buses do not reach, taxis can be used instead.

The Greek bus system covers most of the country through a complex road system. They are very good means of transport as they are quite rapid, dependable and inexpensive. Even when going for long journeys, buses are very efficient and provide for a nice experience.

Railways are also a good and economical means of travel in Greece. More and more rails are added every year to reach more and more places around the country. Railways considerably reduce the travel time for tourists and locals.
If you want to visit the beautiful Greek islands, then ferries provide an adequate means of transport between the mainland and the islands and between the islands.

In Mykonos, you can indulge in a luxurious holiday by staying in the Cavo Tagoo hotel. The hotel stands on a Cliffside that is only a few meters from the town center.

If you want the simplest form of residence in the Aegean, you should visit the cave houses. These are traditional buildings that are located in the rocks. They have a narrow façade, domelike roof, and long but narrow spaces inside. Santorini is another place in Greece that is famous all over the world for its cave houses and people.

Most of the cave houses in Santorini have been transformed into hotel rooms and many visitors have flocked the town to stay in the world famous cave houses. Tradition goes that, the caves were built by ship crews, despite the steepness of cliffs, as resident areas in order to survive. Another tradition goes that the caves were made to be stables for mules.
